HANDBOOK UNDER PREPARATION OF IBC

Handbooks of IBC

Following handbooks on topical subjects related to Built Environment have been prepared by IBC.

1.  Indian Buildings Congress in association with CPWD and IIT Madras has prepared a Handbook on “Seismic Retrofit of Buildings” which was released  by Secretary, Urban Development.

Since 1993, 6 major earthquakes at Uttar Kashi, Lattur, Jabalpur, Chamoli, Bhuj and J& K have occurred in India which has exposed the vulnerability of existing building in India.  Although several Codes of Practices on Earthquake Resistance Design have been published by Bureau of Indian Standards but the construction of number of unsafe buildings is still going on in the country due to non-compliance of the Codes, particularly in Housing Construction under the Private Sector.

In recent years a great urgency has been felt to strengthen the deficient buildings as part of Proactive Disaster Mitigation.  Literature available on Seismic strengthening oversees, though limited is difficult to apply to Indian conditions.  It is with this idea that Indian Buildings Congress and Central Public Works Department under the patronage of Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India conceived the idea for preparing a Handbook which would be comprehensive, yet simple to follow as also acceptable readily. The Handbook is intended primarily to be a source material to help civil engineers involved in seismic assessment and retrofitting of various types of buildings.

The book is recommended as reference and text books for use in design and Construction of buildings.   Handbook on Seismic Retrofit is published by M/s Narosa Publishing House Pvt. Ltd., 22, Medical Association Road, Darya Ganj, New Delhi –11000 2.

2.  Indian Buildings Congress has also prepared a Practical Handbook on “Energy Conservation in Buildings”. This is perhaps the first publication dealing with efficient use of energy and its conservation in buildings which is compatible with the provisions of Energy Conservation Building Code, (ECBC-2007) recently finalized by Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The book and discusses designs of buildings, adopting the principles of solar passive architecture, selection of appropriate materials and processes for minimizing embodied energy, adoption of energy efficient systems and fittings, building automation, energy management, energy audit, etc. The Handbook on Energy Conservation is useful both to civil as well as electrical engineers.

The book is recommended as reference and textbooks for use in design and Construction of buildings. The Handbook on Energy Conservation is published by M/s Nabhi Publication and is available at Jain Book Depot, L-4, Opp. PVR Plaza, Connaught Place, P.O. Box 51, New Delhi-1100 01.

3.  Handbook on Fire Safety is under preparation which shall deal with basic principles, Architectural aspects, Structural aspects, Fire safety measures, Fire protection systems, Fire safety codes, Fire safety evaluation, Repair and rehabilitation of fire damage, Special safety measures for disabled persons, heritage buildings, temporary structures such as tents & Shamianas, Slum and other related issues.  It will give state-of-art literature on the subject.

MID TERM SEMINAR
on
‘Environment Protection in Building Industry’

Indian Buildings Congress will be holding its Mid-Term Seminar on “Environment Protection in Building Industry” in November, 2008.
The Seminar is likely to be held at Patna. The Mid Term Seminar, apart from conducting business like holding Governing Council meeting will also comprise of a Seminar on the theme of “Environment Protection in Building Industry”. Members of the Indian Buildings Congress and professionals of Government Departments, Housing Boards, Development Authorities, Town and Country Planning Organisations, State PWDs, Teaching and Training Institutes, Builders, Developers and all others interested in the design, construction and maintenance of buildings are cordially invited to contribute papers for the Seminar.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SEMINAR

Protecting and enhancing the environment in Building Industry present many challenges and require in-depth knowledge of building components and their vulnerability to contamination and also the environmental impact assessment procedures laid down by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Areas of key concern for the protection and enhancement of environment include energy with associated greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation, use and recycling of construction materials, water management and waste water disposal as well as integration of buildings with related infrastructure and social systems. Overall, buildings consume about one-third of primary energy, two third of electricity generated, one third of raw material inputs and a substantial percentage of freshwater resources. At the same time, buildings account for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions and material waste output. The building sector contributes up to 40% emissions, mostly from energy use during the lifetime of buildings. Identifying areas to reduce these emissions has assumed significant priority in the global effort to reduce climate change. The proposed seminar will provide a unique opportunity to all stakeholders of the building construction and maintenance industry in understanding the protection and enhancement measures required for environmentally sustainable built environment.

Many of the problems can be avoided or at least mitigated by foresight in planning and development of built environment. It is therefore proposed to hold deliberations on “Environment Protection in Building Industry” under the following sub themes including their case studies.

• Environment, Health & Safety Issues

Environmental Impact Assessment

Environmental Standardisation & Legislation

Land Resource Management

Water & Waste Management including Recycling

• Energy Conservation

Protection Against Natural Hazards

Technical Lectures on the following subjects have been
held by IBC in the recent past :-

To promote building science, technology and newer materials, the IBC is conducting regular technical lectures by eminent personalities in the field. The technical lectures are arranged normally in centrally located place in New Delhi and about 100 selected senior processionals from IBC attend the lecture. IBC being a non profit organization in the service to the nation, seek sponsorship for the lectures from reputed industries and building material manufacturers. The name of the sponsor is adequately displayed and the industry representatives are invited to attend the lectures. The sponsor is also allowed about 20 minutes time for technical presentation about his products in addition to visual display of his materials. This gives an opportunity to the sponsor to advertise and interact with the building professionals as well as the users. An approximate expenditure of Rs. 30000/- is incurred for arranging the lecture.
